WHAT TO DO: Assemble the BOSEbuild Speaker and listen to music.

WHAT TO NOTICE: The BOSEbuild Speaker also uses a Magnet and Coil, but it is much louder than the DIY speaker.

WHAT TO LEARN: Similar to the DIY speaker in the previous activity, the BOSEbuild Speaker contains a magnet and coil. The coil is able to vibrate at many different frequencies to produce the sounds that you hear coming out of the speaker.  This coil is more tightly wound and is moving over a larger, more powerful magnet than in the DIY speaker, so it’s more powerful. And the coil is attached to a stiff, but light paper cone, which allows it to move in many directions. The tight seal of the panels also allows for optimal sound.

Now that the students have gone through Activities 1-3, you can hand out the remainder of the BOSEbuild kits to the students, EXCLUDING the sensors.

TIP: We recommend placing notes on the underside of the kits to keep track of which group of students is using each kit.

Each group should get enough supplies to build one speaker. This means in addition to the Control Panel they need: 4 side panels, 1 Speaker Face, and 24 clips. There are 40 clips in each kit but each group only needs 24 to assemble their speaker.

TIP: Only hand out 24 clips to each group and hold the rest in reserve in case some get lost or misplaced.

Instruct the students to plug the wire attached to the back of the Speaker Face into the port on the other side of the Control Panel and assemble the remaining side panels around those two by snapping on 2 clips per edge. Now that the speaker is built, the music from the Purple Mode should be playing more loudly (volume is controlled with the slider on the Control Panel). Is this louder than the DIY speaker? Why?

The reason is that, while the Speaker Panel works the same way as the DIY speaker, the speaker in the BOSEbuild Speaker cube has a much larger and stronger magnet, a much more powerful coil of wire with more turns, and a well designed stiff, but light, paper cone.

At this point remind the students that the inside of the speaker works just the same as the Magnet and Coil from the previous stages where the vibrations at different frequencies between the two are what cause the sound to be made.

In the BOSEbuild kit you will also find Silhouette Covers which you can hand out to the students. These can be used to decorate the speakers by sliding then under the clips that are holding the side panels together.
